Introduction to Southampton - City Centre
Southampton is a heritage shipbuilding city on England’s southwest coast. For tourists it is an interesting destination with museums, medieval buildings, pubs and live entertainment. There is an eclectic choice of hotels in Southampton, which will suit all budgets and tastes. Southampton city centre is sited in the fork created by the confluence of the rivers Test and Itchen. Many of the city centre’s main attractions are located close to the old walls, including the Tudor House Museum and its pictorial facade, God’s House Tower, the Medieval Merchant’s House and venues for live music such as the Mayflower Theatre. The Southampton Maritime Museum is just outside the centre, near the Eastern Docks, and offers myriad displays and exhibits themed on the city’s seafaring heritage. The Solent Sky aviation museum is on the other side of the city. The city is a good stopover for passengers embarking or disembarking the cruise liners at Southampton Docks.
