Introduction to Shrewsbury - City Centre
No fewer than 600 officially listed historic buildings stand in Shrewsbury, a community situated just 14kms east of northern Wales alongside the River Severn. Welsh influence is very strong in this community and its surrounding Shropshire area, and many people call the town by its Welsh name, Amwythig. Several Shrewsbury City Centre hotels are housed within the same black and white timber structures which stood when one of the town's most famous sons, Charles Darwin, lived here. The local rail station is situated next to the 11th century castle, where the Shropshire Regimental Museum is housed and where many outdoor drama productions are staged on its grounds in the summer. The municipal art gallery can be found on the ground floor inside the comparatively younger 17th century Rowley's House Museum, where each room depicts a different time period in the town's history. The Elizabethan Old Market Hall, first opened in 1596, now shows art and foreign films next to a digital arts exhibition. The local tourist information centre can be located inside its main performing arts venue, the Music Hall.
