Introduction to Shepton Mallet, England
The attractive little Somerset market town of Shepton Mallet lies in the valley of the River Sheppey, in the rolling Mendip Hills, close to the great Georgian towns of Bath, Wells and Bristol. Set on the ancient Roman Fosse Way, 'Sheppey', as it's locally known, has evidence of Roman settlement as well as a good number of listed buildings of architectural interest. Medieval Shepton Mallet was the heart of the wool trade and is now famous for its cider. Many pubs here serve scrumpy - the strong traditional version of the modern-day drink - to be taken only in small quantities by those not used to the brew! The little town makes a good base for visitors bent on exploring Somerset and its Roman, medieval and Georgian treasures. Shepton Mallet hotels are scattered about, both in the centre and on the outskirts, and local pubs also provide accommodation. The market square holds the ornate Market Cross, and Saxon stonework can be seen in the parish church. Glastonbury is a favourite daytrip from here, both for its ancient abbey linked with the romantic Arthurian legends and for its new-age activities.
