Introduction to Selby, England
The charming little Yorkshire town of Selby lies along the River Ouse, just a few kilometres south of the county town of York with its famous Minster and long history. In medieval times, Selby was an important market town, river port and shipbuilding centre, aided by the Selby Canal, bringing trade from Leeds. Originally a Viking settlement, the town was the birth location of King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, reputed to have been born at Selby Abbey in 1069. This magnificent parish church is larger than most of England's cathedrals. The town has many significant historic sites as well as charming Selby hotels, some of which are set in heritage buildings. Tourism is significant here, mostly due to the abbey, resulting in the successful renovation of a number of ancient structures. Due to the town's proximity to the major cities of Leeds and York, it's a good base for those interested in the varied and sometimes violent cultural and political history of this region of Yorkshire.
