Introduction to Seaton, England
The charming small seaside town of Seaton lies on Devon's sector of the famous Jurassic Coast. Facing pretty Lyme Bay at the mouth of the Exe River, the town is bordered by red cliffs to the north and white cliffs to the south. A sea wall protects the shingled beach and small harbour. The Dorset and East Devon World Heritage coastline gives visitors a dramatic geological journey back in time, demonstrated by the unique rock strata encompassing 185 million years of the planet's development and known for its fossilised dinosaur remains. Farming communities have existed here since the dawn of human history and the little port was of importance to the Romans and again during the Middle Ages. During the late 19th century, the town became a popular tourist resort, with many Seaton hotels set in imposing Victorian buildings, and the charming Seaton Tramway built to replace the local railway now draws as many as 185,000 visitors every year. Surrounding the town are ancient woodlands, springline mires and wild grasslands as well as small farms and smallholdings.
