Introduction to Reading - City Centre
Reading is found where the River Thames meets the River Kennet, with the latter running through the city centre. Hotels in Reading City Centre (also called Central Reading as the town does not officially hold a city charter) provide a great location for exploring as the area is completely accessible on foot. The pearl of Reading is its abbey ruins and adjacent Forbury Gardens, which maintain their Victorian air. The Museum of Reading showcases the town's long history that began in the Roman city in neighbouring Silchester. Get an intimate view of the Thames by taking a river trip or enjoy a scenic Thames-side walk. Colourful shops line the city centre, and the addition of Broad Street Mall and the Oracle Centre has made Reading a regional shopping highlight. Summer is full of festivals; Water Fest is a family favourite in June, the Real Ale and Jazz Festival occurs in July, and a major music festival is held every August. The dense scattering of pubs, clubs, cafes and bars make for a vibrant nightlife, and the sizeable university population keeps it from waning on week nights. A stay in Reading city centre will provide infinite opportunities for discovery and excitement.
