Introduction to Ramsgate - Beach
The heyday of the little Isle of Thanet seaside town of Ramsgate was in the Georgian and Victorian eras, when well-heeled London residents arrived by coach and later by train on a regular basis to savour the gentility of the town's culture. Nowadays, it's still a popular destination, appealing more to retirees and families with young children than to upscale visitors. Set close to Broadstairs and the larger and noisier resort of Margate, Ramsgate lies in one of the most historical regions of England. It still boasts Georgian and Victorian terraces and townhouses among its landmarks. The town's harbour and beaches, ringed by attractive Ramsgate Beach hotels, have seen the fashionable in London society come and go for several hundred years. During the famous Dundee Evacuations of WWII, Ramsgate was the main harbour for the little boats rescuing British soldiers from certain death in France. The fascinating Maritime Museum traces Dundee and many earlier triumphs, and the 18th century dry dock is well worth a visit. Its main beaches are overlooked by towering cliffs and are far less busy than those in neighbouring resorts. Breathtaking 10th century Canterbury Cathedral lies just a short drive inland from the resort.
