The town of Polegate in East Sussex is located around five miles north from the popular seaside resort town of Eastbourne and has a population of just over 8,000 inhabitants. The town was built up when the railway arrived in the 1840s, although the railway line which serviced the town has now closed down. One of the town's main attractions is Ovenden's Mill, a tower mill which was restored and is now open to the public. The Cuckoo Trail, a hiking and walking trail, runs through Polegate and stretches approximately 14 miles from an Eastbourne suburb to the small market town of Heathfield. This trail is popular among outdoor and nature enthusiasts, and passes through several other small villages. The town is served by the A22 road, which runs between London and Eastbourne. There are several Polegate hotels to choose from, ranging from three to five-star establishments catering for visitors on various budgets.
