Introduction to Peterborough - City Centre
The cathedral city of Peterborough is set along the banks of the River Nene in the eastern county of Cambridgeshire, some 121kms to the north of London. Settled since pre-Roman times, the land is low-lying, flat and agricultural, falling away towards the Fens at its eastern borders. The city was designated as a New Town in the 1960s. The centre still undergoing regeneration, which begun in 1982 with the opening of a massive shopping centre. A project for the rest of the downtown area is opposed by English Heritage as it affects the city's historic core. Peterborough City Centre hotels are a good base for touring the Fens as far as the ancient town of Ely, set on the only hill for miles around. Peterborough's two most imposing heritage buildings are the cathedral itself and 16th century Burghley House, a fairytale concoction of towers and gables and the local seat of the Marquess of Exeter, the hereditary Lord Paramount of Peterborough.other spellings: peterborough otel city center, peter borough city hotell, peterboruogh hote center
