Easily one of the world’s most famous English cities, Oxford is best known as the home of the University of Oxford. Students and academics have long visited England’s oldest university city over the centuries since the university was founded in the 1100s. Huge numbers of tourists also come to stay at hotels in Oxford. The university itself, with its illustrious history and many beautiful buildings, is a major attraction. The closest major airports to Oxford are at London and Birmingham. The M40 is the nearest motorway and provides easy, if sometimes busy, access to the city. The railway station sits just west of the centre and is easy to reach. Much of this academic hub is best enjoyed on foot but bicycles are another popular option, especially with university students and staff. Popular local attractions include the Bodleian Library, Hertford Bridge, the Sheldonian Theatre and the views from the tower at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.
