Introduction to Ongar, England

The ancient Essex township of Chipping Ongar, now known as Ongar, lies centrally between Chelmsford, Epping, Chigwell and Dunmow, and is now a commuter town for London, set at the end of the Central underground line. The pretty High Street with its old buildings hints at the town's impressive past as an important market town from Norman through medieval times. The ancient 11th century parish church of St Martin shows Norman remnants and the ruined earthworks of the Norman motte and bailey castle are found beyond the northern end of the High Street. The town is set near the M25 and M11 motorways, just 40kms from the centre of London, with Ongar hotels convenient bases for exploring the region as well as for daytrips to the capital. The adjacent village of High Ongar holds a conservation area including the timber-framed Post Office Cottages set next to the 12th century Grade I listed St Mary's Church and several other 17th and 18th century buildings.
