Introduction to Nottingham - City Centre
In the UK’s East Midlands region lies the city of Nottingham, located in the ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire. Approximately 300,000 visitors from overseas visit the city each year, attracted by its nightlife, shops, history and the legend of Robin Hood, with visits to Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest possible. Restaurants, transportation and hotels in Nottingham city centre cater to the needs of tourists. History-based attractions include the Galleries of Justice, the City of Caves, the Lace Market, and ancient pubs. A multitude of architectural styles can be found throughout the city, with some buildings dating back to the 1100s. The central point is Old Market Square, the largest such square in the UK, dominated by Council House. There are Baroque columns and stone lion statues watching over the square and a ground floor arcade that houses upmarket boutiques. Other frequented sites include the Playhouse, Theatre Royal, the Castle Museum, Wollaton Park’s Yard Gallery, Djanogly Gallery and the Brewhouse Yard Museum.
