Introduction to Nottingham - Beeston
Regarded as a suburb of the county town of Nottingham, Beeston lies some six kilometres from the city centre, close to the Nottingham University campus at University Park. On the district's borders are the River Trent and its wetlands, an interesting destination for birders. Beeston hotels are mostly found in the central district, close to the Beeston Marina. Many properties are set on the broad expanse of the Nottingham Canal, constructed around 1802 to bypass the rivers Trent and Erewash. Beeston's heritage buildings include a fine manor house and the church of St John the Baptist, built in the 11th century and rebuilt in 1843 by the local lord of the manor. Both buildings are in the town's West End Conservation Area along with a good number of other historic buildings set along Church Street, West End, Dovecoat Lane and Grange Avenue. Also here is the historic village cross. The only remnant of Beeston's once flourishing silk industry is the Anglo-Scotian Mills, a towering crenellated listed structure on Wollaton Road. The still-operating knitted shawl factory is well worth a visit for its 17th century knitting frames. other spellings: beestonhotels, hotelsbeeston, beston hotel, beehton, beesdon, besdon, beesthon
