Introduction to Northampton - City Centre
Well positioned halfway between London and Birmingham in the centre of England, Northampton is one of the largest towns in the country and home to a host of sights. The most attractive of its many old buildings is undoubtedly the old neo-gothic Guildhall, located right by the central Tourist Information office. Built 150 years ago, this wonderfully ornate structure features large, beautifully crafted window arches and an attractive main clock tower. Northampton Museum and Art Gallery features a wide variety of artefacts with a focus on the show industry, which was responsible for the town's rise. The charming house at 78 Derngate is the sole house outside of Scotland designed by the famous architect Charles Rennie McKintosh; it includes a fascinating museum within its perfectly restored structure. The majority of Northampton city centre hotels are conveniently clustered around the Grosvenor shopping centre, just south of Greyfriars and on nearby Broad Street.
