Introduction to Newton Abbot, England
The classic market town of Newton Abbot sits alongside the banks of the River Teign in the southwestern corner of England. The town began life trading wool in the medieval era but really rose to prominence during the Victorian Age as a major railroad equipment producer. The extremely charismatic Newton Abbot Railway Station still serves passengers and provides a useful rail link to the rest of England. There is a popular racecourse in neighbouring Kingsteignton and Teigngrace parishes, while Decoy Country Park provides a lovely natural area to explore. In September many people visit the town for its Cheese and Onion Fair, which dates back centuries. Visitors will find a decent selection of Newton Abbot hotels and inns in its historic downtown, along with important historic attractions like St Leonards Tower, Bradley Manor and Forde House. The town's proximity to Dartmoor National Park as well as the seaside resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth has earned it the title of the Gateway to Moor and Sea.
