Introduction to Newcastle, England
The northeast English city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne enjoys a distinct Geordie culture, a rich history dating back to Roman times and a current status as one of the UK's trendiest cities. Most Newcastle hotels can be found in the city centre, but visitors may also choose to stay in nearby Gateshead, located at the opposite end of the modern Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the world famous Tyne Bridge. No European shopping centre is bigger than the Metro Centre, which boasts several restaurants, a cinema and even a chapel. More unique shopping experiences are available at the flawlessly-preserved Victorian Central Arcade and the city's historic heart of Grainger Town, where buskers and public speakers can easily be heard from the 1838 Grey's Monument in its centre. The two-floor Biscuit Factory is Great Britain's largest original art shop. A mysterious vampire rabbit gargoyle hangs above the office block adjacent to St Nicholas Cathedral, while a Chinese arch greets visitors to the local Chinatown, which also contains many Japanese and Korean establishments.Visit our Newcastle Travel Guide
