Introduction to Newbury - City Centre
The English market town of Newbury lies in the Berkshire countryside and is best known for its racecourse and the controversial USAF air base at nearby Greenham Common, the scene of many anti-nuclear weapon protests over the years. Set on both the Kennet and Avon Canal and the River Kennet, the town centre is a pretty area with many buildings dating from the Middle Ages. Nearby, Donnington Castle's ruins outline the town's involvement in the Civil War and, during the 18th century, it became a famous stop-off point on the coaching route between London and Bath, with many large and luxurious coaching inns. The town centre is a charming reminder of its long history, especially since a bypass was established to remove heavy traffic from its narrow streets. St Nicholas Church, the almshouses and the Corn Exchange are slices of history, close to Newbury City Centre hotels set in the same coaching inns which once held London's nobility during their two-day long journeys to the newly-fashionable Bath spas.
