Introduction to Milton Keynes - Bradwell
Originally standing as a supporting village for ancient Bradwell Priory, dissolved by the order of King Henry VIII around 1540, Buckinghamshire's Bradwell village is now a part of Milton Keynes New Town. Evidence of settlement here as early as the Bronze Age was revealed during archaeological investigations prior to the construction of the New Town, including a hoard of gold jewellery. Attractions in Bradwell, 79kms to the west of London, include sports, cricket and football fields, and an important go-karting track. New Bradwell is a Victorian extension to the original village, incorporating a few heritage mill houses and farmhouses that were already in existence. Dividing the two sections of the village is the grand Union Canal, now offering boating and fishing facilities. Bradwell hotels are set within easy reach of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Bradwell Abbey and its Priory, founded in 1115. A small Grade I listed chapel and a farmhouse are all that remain of the monastery buildings, with a cultural activity and urban studies centre housed in the farmhouse.
