Introduction to Margate, England
For more than 250 years, the seaside town of Margate in southeast England has been a popular holiday destination for London residents, who can reach the town in less than two hours by train from either Charing Cross or Victoria stations. Not surprisingly, most Margate hotels are situated close to the sea, and several of them have been in business for centuries. However, the town's famous sandy beaches aren't the only attractions. The popular Dreamland Amusement Park, once home to Great Britain's oldest roller coaster built from wood, is currently being redeveloped. The town is also home to both Great Britain's oldest theatre, the Theatre Royal, and the country's smallest theatre, the appropriately named Tom Thumb Theatre. One of the most unusual attractions is the shell grotto, a cave elaborately decorated with at least four million shells which was rediscovered in 1835 on a small back street. Each year, Margate hosts a jazz festival during one July weekend.
