Introduction to Manchester - Bury
Historically part of Lancashire and set on the edge of the Pennine moors, the town of Bury was once one of the most important mills town in the northwestern cotton mill region during the Industrial Revolution. Its famous open-air market still takes place, fuelled by the recently-completed Manchester Metrolink tram line. The marker is famous for its local speciality dish, black pudding. Overlooking the town from its perch on the moors, above Helmshore and Ramsbottom, is the Peel Tower, commemorating Bury's most famous son and founder of the Metropolitan Police, UK Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Landmarks in Bury, originally set on a Roman road, range from the excavated ruins of the walls of 16th century Bury Castle, set in the town centre, to imposing Bury Parish Church and a few mills, now converted to offices and apartments. Now an important dormitory town for Manchester through its link with the M66 motorway, the town and its Bury hotels allow guests to be in the city centre within half an hour. Bury Art Museum is worth a visit, with works by Turner, De Wint and Cox on display here.Visit our Manchester Travel Guide
