Introduction to Maidstone - City Centre
Gateway to the Garden of England in Kent, Maidstone is an attractive town full of museums and other cultural offerings. Just outside the centre, Leeds Castle is a stunning building that juts out into a lake and has been described as 'the loveliest castle in the world'. The Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery features an expansive collection of fascinating artefacts from the local area, as well as a small art gallery. For a glimpse back to the days of horse and cart, head to the Carriage Museum, but be warned it is only open in summer. All Saints Church is an impressive building that was reconstructed more than 600 years ago; this is a must-see for visitors. There is also a good variety of shows at nearby Hazlitt Theatre, the main playhouse in the town. Maidstone city centre hotels are surprisingly affordable and mostly located close to the railway station.
