Introduction to Macclesfield, England
The English mill town of Macclesfield is said to be one of the few which escaped the bombings of WWII, but today, this Cheshire east community may be best known as the hometown of the late Joy Division front man, Ian Curtis. There are no fewer than half a dozen Macclesfield hotels, and the majority of them are either modern chain establishments or stately inns which have greeted guests for centuries. Many of Macclesfield's past guests came to the town because of its strong silk industry, which is now proudly exhibited within the local Silk Museum. St Michael's Church, St Alban's Church, Christ Church, and the King Edward Street Chapel are Macclesfield's best known historic churches. Cottages and shops now stand on the former site of Macclesfield Castle, but the Barracks Square and Armoury Towers remain just as impressive as they were when they were first constructed in the 1830s.
