Introduction to Lyndhurst, England
The history of Lyndhurst was first recorded in 980 AD, and this town located 14kms of Southampton in the middle of southern England became the unofficial capital of the New Forest less than a century later when William the Conqueror made the area an official royal hunting ground. As the largest settlement in the New Forest area, there are dozens of Lyndhurst hotels ready to welcome guests wishing to tour the New Forest National Park and its surrounds. The town is also famous as the place where Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration behind the title character of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, lived after her marriage. Alice's grave is located in the cemetery of the St Michael & All Angels Church, which is an attraction worth visiting in its own right because of its colourful stones and stained glass windows. Visitors can also learn more about the New Forest at the New Forest Museum or take a closer look at the living creatures inside the eight open air pens at the Reptile Centre.
