Introduction to Louth, England
The unofficial capital of the hilly range known as the Lincolnshire Wolds in the county of the same name is Louth, whose other claim to fame is the location of the 1536 Lincolnshire Rising in St James Church. The 90m spire of St James Church still dominates the town's skyline, but the church is just one among many historic 17th and 18th century buildings found throughout the town, including many Louth hotels. Among the best known exhibits in the Louth Museum are two replicas of an 1844 panorama painting of a view from the summit of the St James Church spire, while Hubbard's Hills is a popular park surrounding the River Lud. The town is also home to several specialist grocers and other independent shops, including a department store whose history goes back to 1781. Meridian Leisure Centre is a far more modern attraction with a two-level gym and 25m swimming pool.
