Introduction to London - Westminster
The City of Westminster, as the district is known, adjoins the ancient City of London and is set along the River Thames, holding a fascinatingly long history of its own. Home to the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the 13th century Westminster Abbey, massive early 19th century government buildings and even Buckingham Palace itself, this part of London borders the West End district of Mayfair. The home of the Prime Minister, 10 Downing Street, is also found here. As with the rest of central London, Westminster and its residential areas are arranged as large squares centred with tiny parks and surrounded by multi-storey Georgian heritage homes with ‘mews’ to their rears, where horses and carriages were once kept. Westminster hotels are often set in converted mansions within easy walking distance of all the historic sights of the area. London’s West End shopping hub is a short bus, underground or taxi ride away, as is the theatre district. Visit our London Travel Guide
