Introduction to London - Bloomsbury
The leafy garden squares of London’s Bloomsbury district provide a welcome touch of greenery in the geographical heart of the capital. This fashionable neighbourhood is tucked in between Holborn and Euston Road, and has been a favoured spot for writers, artists and other cultural figures since Victorian times. But its garden squares are the real highlight here. The first one to be laid out was Bloomsbury Square in 1660. This huge open space provides a grassy spot for residents to walk and relax. It is bordered by the British Museum, one of London’s most popular attractions. There are around a dozen other stately squares in this district including Bedford Square, lined with Georgian houses, and Gordon Square, where literary members of the legendary Bloomsbury Group once lived and interacted. Notable churches like the Church of Christ the King are here, along with numerous important universities, hospitals and research venues. Any of the Bloomsbury hotels around the district’s many squares make for great accommodation in this wonderful part of London.Visit our London Travel Guide
