Introduction to Leicester - Braunstone
The former parish of Braunstone is now a suburb of the West Midlands conurbation of Leicester, the county town of Leicestershire. The suburb's most striking feature is its main street, Kingsway, with its long, narrow village green set at its centre and running the length of the street. Braunstone Lane, set in the oldest part of the village, separates a large 1930s social housing project from the older, privately owned Braunstone Town properties. In the old part of the village are many Georgian and Victorian heritage buildings, including an old school house and several inns doubling as Braunstone hotels. Due to the 20th century development of the area, shopping facilities in the district are excellent, with several shopping complexes catering for residents' needs. For local recreation, Braunstone Park is one of the largest parks in the region. It is set on the grounds of the ancient Braunstone Estate, mentioned in the Domesday Book as a manor.
