Introduction to Kirkby in Furness, England
Set below Kirkby Moor on Cumbria's rugged northwestern coastline, the village of Kirkby in Furness is an agglomeration of six hamlets; Soutergate, Chapels, Wall End, Sand Side, Beck Side and Marshside, developed as a result of the opening of the Burlington slate quarries and the coming of the railroad. Much of the 19th century housing was built for the workers in the quarries. Although the village is mostly a commuter community for nearby Broughton in Furness, the quarries and local agriculture here still employ a small resident work force. The village lies in a bay set between two peninsulas, with fine views over the mountains of the Lake District National Park and the estuary of the River Duddon. The region is a major tourist destination, with Kirkby in Furness hotels busy during the summer months. Outdoor sports such as climbing, hiking, walking, sailing and fishing are popular here, with the region a hub for bird watchers and nature-lovers. other spellings: kirkby in furnesshotels, kirkby furness otel, kekby in furness hotel, kirkby furnes
