Introduction to Ipswich - City Centre
The charming riverside town of Ipswich is Suffolk's county town, set on the estuary of the River Orwell as it spills into the North Sea. It's an ancient town, first part of the Roman coastal defences, with Castle Hill the site of a large fort and the most imposing Roman villa in Suffolk. Its docks were in full operation by the eighth century, important for trade with Scandinavia and the continent. The earth ramparts around the town centre were raised by the Vikings, in occupation for several hundred years. The medieval heart of the town contains many quaint half-timbered homes and other architectural reminders of its impressive history, although modern developments here sit poorly next to heritage buildings. Ipswich City Centre hotels welcome a good number of visitors each year, with the Ancient House on Buttermarket a favourite sight for its elaborate pargetting. Another fascinating link with the town's history is the inn where Charles Dickens once stayed, with its stairs and meandering corridors vividly featured in his novel, 'The Pickwick Papers'. other spellings: ipswich otel city, ipswich center hotell, ipswich hote city center, ipswich hotes
