Introduction to Horncastle, England
The historic Lincolnshire market town of Horncastle lies 35kms from the county town of Lincoln in the Lincolnshire Wolds, north of the Wildmore and West Fens. Set on the confluence of the rivers Waring and Bain, the town dates from the 13th century and was internationally famous for its massive Horse Fair, last held in the early 20th century. Nowadays, horses have been replaced with antiques, with many shops and centres in and around the town attracting collectors, dealers and the curious. The remains of a Roman fort also attract visitors, although Horncastle was only a small Roman settlement accessed via the River Bain. It's a sleepy town with a fine large parish church and quaint buildings, perfect for a stress-busting break in one of the friendly Horncastle hotels. Gently-rolling low hills and agricultural flatlands surround the town, and the long-distance Viking Way running through its outskirts attracts walkers and hikers. other spellings: horncastlehotels, horncastle otel, hormcastle hotell, horncastel hote, horncaslte
