Introduction to Hindhead, England
The attractive Surrey village of Hindhead lies 17kms to the southwest of Guildford, close to Haslemere and the National Trust area of the Devil's Punchbowl, notorious until the mid-19th century for its highwaymen, general lawlessness and infamous Gibbet Hill, where the bodies of convicted criminals were hung in chains as a warning to others. Founded around the mid-16th century, the village's most famous residents were the playwright George Bernard Shaw and the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Hindhead lies in the Surrey Hills on the busy A3, with its centre at the junction with the A388, making road access to London, the south coast and Portsmouth straightforward. The new Hindhead Tunnel bypass, due to open in mid-2011, will lessen the village's High Street traffic and improve access to Hindhead hotels. The village makes a good base for touring a number of nearby ancient abbeys and monasteries, including Tichfield Abbey, Boxgrove Priory and the ruins of the 12th century Waverly Abbey, England's first Cistercian monastery. other spellings: hindheadhotels, otelin himdhead, hindheda hotell, hindhaed hote, hindehad hotes
