Highbridge is a little market town located by the Somerset Levels, close to the mouth of the River Brue in the English southwestern county of Somerset. It is situated around 30kms northwest of Somerset's county town of Taunton. The town centre lies around the crossroads formed by Market Street and Church Street. It has been in steady decline over recent years, with many major banks and small independent shops closing down. The former wharf area has gone through a period of refurbishment, with new housing stretching from the town centre alongside the river to the railway. Industrial estates have been developed on the outskirts of Highbridge, mainly due to the proximity of the main M5 motorway, which runs just a couple of kilometres to the west of the town. Much of the town's employment now circulates around light industry and transport on these sites. Accommodation in the town is sparse, but there are a couple of Highbridge hotels and several bed and breakfasts to choose from.
