Introduction to Herne Bay, England
The seaside town of Herne Bay lies on the southern shore of the River Thames estuary as it meets the North Sea, and has been a resort destination for Londoners since the early 19th century, with its heyday in the late Victorian era spurred on by the arrival of the railway. Set in the pretty Kent countryside, the town and its gently-sloping beach, promenade, ice-cream parlours, pier and bandstand still welcome holidaymakers each summer. This region of Kent has a long history as it lies close to the Roman road between the capital and Canterbury. The oldest building in Herne Bay is an 18th century inn, and the town had a reputation as a smugglers' haven in the 19th century. Herne Bay hotels and guesthouses line the small streets off the seafront, with the charming Victorian hotels on the promenade itself evoking nostalgia for the days before cheap foreign holidays. A popular daytrip from Herne Bay is the short run to magnificent Canterbury.
