Introduction to Hemel Hempstead, England
Hemel Hempstead differs from most new towns in that it was built around an old settlement with St Mary’s Church at its centre. Houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries can be found in the main High Street along with a collection of speciality shops many of which sell locally produced goods. Many of the hotels in Hemel Hempstead are to be found near the centre which boasts water gardens, parkland and an undercover shopping mall. Choices of Hemel Hempstead hotels are limited but many of the well known chains have accommodation available. In addition to hotels in Hemel Hempstead there are a number of guest houses providing good value rooms. The Grand Union Canal, with several locks, provides a pleasant place to take a walk and there are a few nice pubs serving good food. On a Wednesday there is an antiques market in the town and Thursday to Saturday a general market.
