Introduction to Hemel Hempstead - City Centre
Situated just 25 miles northwest of central London in Hertfordshire, Hemel Hempstead is an old town which has in many ways shed its past, but still retains some fine old touches. The Old Town here features an attractive array of multicoloured houses and cobbled streets that makes an ideal backdrop when taking a stroll. The 12th century church is a highly unusual building with a very tall thin spire that ranks among the highest in Europe. Heading out of town, the Grand Union Canal is another good spot for walking, especially in summer, with its handful of waterside pubs that make excellent pitstops. A little farther out and just a short drive away is Berkhamsted Castle, a mostly ruined structure from the 12th century sitting right beside the river. Almost all Hemel Hempstead city centre hotels are packed into the small area where St Albans Road and the A4146, the gateway to the M25, meet.
