Introduction to Gloucester - City Centre
Set on the River Severn in the southwest of England, close to the Welsh border, was once one the country's most prominent Roman towns, now the city of Gloucester. Founded in 97AD, its recent economic history is likened to the aerospace industry, replacing the formerly busy trading port on the Severn supported by the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Nowadays, the wharves and several warehouses boast the National Waterways Museum and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. In the city centre are many medieval and Tudor buildings, gabled and half-timbered as was the fashion in those far-off days. Beautiful Gloucester Cathedral was built over the foundations of a seventh century abbey, and holds the mausoleum of King Edward II of England; its cloisters were used in the Harry Potter series of movies. Norman and medieval churches are worth exploring and a good choice of Gloucester City Centre hotels is set close to the town's major attractions. other spellings: glouceester cityotel, glouceestor hotell center, groucester hote, grocester hotes center
