Introduction to Gainsborough, England
The Lincolnshire town of Gainsborough is set along the banks of the River Trent and was an important inland river port for transportation of goods to Hull, 88kms away on the North Sea coast. Settled since Saxon times and a centre for the Viking administration, its beautiful 15th century Gainsborough Old Hall is a timber-framed 'strong house', one of the best preserved of England's manor houses. Kings Richard III and Henry VIII were regular visitors to the mansion. Gainsborough has a strong industrial and manufacturing base and a choice of comfortable Gainsborough hotels catering for both business and leisure travellers. Every year in June, the town holds the Riverside Festival, a grand celebration involving music, parades, fireworks, local arts and crafts and community activities. The splendid Georgian parish church of All Saints is well worth a visit, as are the city's Heritage Centre and the WWII Dambusters Museum, celebrating the famous air raid which took off from nearby RAF Scampton. other spellings: ginsboroughhotels, otel gansborouf, gainsborough hotell, ganesboroof hote, giansboroh
