Introduction to Framlingham, England
The original Anglo-Saxon settlement at Framlingham is now an attractive small Suffolk market town called 'Fram' by its 3,000 residents, with its own conservation area containing heritage buildings from the medieval era and the Middle Ages. Its main attraction is the superb Framlingham Castle, the seat of the Earls of Norfolk and built in the late 12th century. The structure comprises massive curtain walls and towers protecting the domestic buildings within. Unusually, it has no castle keep and its manor house is set against the impressive walls. Steeped in English Royal history, the castle attracts thousands of visitors annually, with many staying in one of the several Framlingham hotels. Another attraction nearby for those interested in WWII aviation is the former RAF Framlingham airfield, a heavy bomber facility mainly used by four squadrons of the USAF flying the famous B17 Flying Fortresses. Framlingham's Summer Arts festival helped the town to achieve the distinction of Country Life's 'Best Place to Live' award. other spellings: framinghamhoels, famingham otel, frmingham hotell, fraingham hote, framngham
