Introduction to Folkestone - Beach
Set in a valley between the sea cliffs of Kent, Folkestone has been a popular small coastal resort destination since Victorian times. Its pretty, sandy beach is the closest of all the Kent beaches to London at just an hour away from the capital. Originally a trading and fishing port, and one of the five wealthy Cinque Ports in medieval times, the town was a popular landing spot for smugglers of fine French brandy by the 18th century. The harbour is the town's main historic attraction, along with the Leas, the cliffs overlooking the port itself with their 200-year-old defensive Martello Tower. The Channel Tunnel terminal is close by, making the town a pleasant stop-off for travellers to the continent, with a good selection of Folkestone Beach hotels providing comfortable lodgings. The sand beach offers views across to France on clear days and is backed by a pleasant promenade where leisurely walks and ice creams can be enjoyed.
