The town of Ferndown lies in east Dorset, just inland from the seaside resort town of Bournemouth and the spectacular Poole Harbour, famous for its upmarket marina, port and expensive properties. It's a sizeable town for Dorset, with a population of over 17,000 and a relatively high proportion of retirees. Ferndown has excellent road, sea and air transport links, with the M27, M23 and M4 motorways within a short drive. Poole Port offers ferries to Cherbourg, Santander, St Malo and the Channel Islands, and Bournenouth Airport provides sunshine flights and extensive UK routes via five low-cost airlines. On the outskirts of town is the largest industrial park in the county, with Ferndown hotels geared to serving business travellers as well as tourists. Several golf clubs plus other sports facilities are supplied and for outdoor enthusiasts, Poole Harbour offers sailing, and the wild heathlands and woods around the town are good for walking and hiking, although walkers should watch out for heath fires in summer.
