Although the Surrey town of Epsom lies within the Greater London Urban Area just 30kms from the centre of the capital, its High Street is as traditional as visitors would wish. Famous for its historic Epsom Downs Racecourse, the town is a mecca for horsey types and racing fans throughout the racing season, including the British Royal family. It's an ancient settlement, mentioned in the Domesday Book and once famous for its mineral water spas, with the first Epsom Derby having taken place in 1780, putting the town firmly on the map. Epsom hotels are full to overflowing during the racing season, with advance booking the only way to secure a room. The pretty town can be explored on foot and there are plenty of good restaurants, although the best of the traditional pubs are set outside the town centre, close to the railway station. Bourne Hall Museum is worth a visit for its interesting local exhibits and for families, Horton Park Children's Farm is a fun day out.
