Introduction to Ely, England
The cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire is one place to the east of England that tourists will relish. The market centre has a long rich history dating back to the days of Oliver Cromwell and before that, Hereford the Wake. The village was originally named as the Isle of Eels due to the fact it regularly became waterlogged. These wet lowlands of eastern England remain watery areas and are still known as the Fens. The Norman cathedral is the major draw for travellers, and to accommodate the high numbers visiting the region in summer there is a good range of Ely hotels. The other attraction in the city is the home of Oliver Cromwell, the uncrowned king who lived here in 1636. His affairs, along with his conflict with the Catholic Church, are retold in the house in St Mary's Street. The town is just 20 minutes' drive from Cambridge, with the North Sea coast about an hour away.
