The industrial town and port of Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, named after the pretty Shropshire market town of Ellesmere, lies in the southern area of the Wirral Peninsula, along the Manchester Ship Canal. Primarily the base for an oil refinery, chemical works and car manufacturers, the town sits astride the junction of the M53 and M56 motorways. Although hardly a mecca for tourism, the town hosts the National Waterways Museum on Ellesmere Port Dock, of interest for its comprehensive details of the famous Manchester Ship Canal and other well-known canals. Ellesmere Port hotels mainly cater for business travellers to the area and to nearby Liverpool, although the historic dock is somewhat of an attraction for its Ellesmere Port Historic Dock and Conservation Area. The lively city of Liverpool is just a short motorway drive away, as are the Roman town of Chester and the Welsh border.
