Introduction to Ellesmere, England
The pretty market town of Ellesmere lies in the north of the county of Shropshire, close both to Oswestry and the glacial Meres, a series of natural lakes. It's a typical little Shropshire town, with a unique location for its bowling green - atop the foundations of an 11th century motte and bailey castle, giving local sportsmen a fine view of the surrounding countryside. Its history goes back to medieval times, with the town and its Ellesmere hotels popular spots for visitors to this charming county. Set on an offshoot of the 18th century Llangollen Canal at the crossroads of the A495 and A528, some 25kms from the county town of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere boasts several historic landmarks in addition to the Meres. Thomas Telford's 18th century house lies adjacent to the canal, with the early 19th century Town Hall a notable building. Just outside the town is the stately home of Oteley Hall and its lovely landscaped park. other spellings: elesmeerhotels, ellesmeer otel, ellesmree hotell, ellesemre hote, ellemsere hotle
