Introduction to Eastbourne - City Centre
A popular seaside resort in Victorian times, Eastbourne today reflects much of that faded glory.

This pleasant and peaceful city is fortunate in having remained largely immune to the rampant commercialism that makes nearby Brighton plenty of fun but deprives it of a lot of charm.

Eastbourne City Centre hotels play host to large numbers of older visitors, and the city is today home to a large retirement community.

The Victorian seafront is reasonably well-preserved and the 1930s band stand, in which summer concerts are held, adds to the historic character here, where visitors can enjoy the fact that the city gets more sunshine than anywhere else in the country.

Within easy reach is shopping at the Arndale Centre, rail services at the main railway station, cricket at the city's cricket club and two golf courses with 27 holes between them.

Roads around Devonshire Place, leading up from the waterfront, provide pleasant walks past Victorian houses on the way to an area rich in restaurants, pubs, cafes and everything from banks and estate agents to opticians and jewellers.
