Introduction to Durham, England
The English city of Durham has much to recommend it. From Durham hotels, visitors can enjoy such wide-ranging attractions as the significant and extremely picturesque Norman cathedral, an 11th century World Heritage castle and Durham University. Located in the northeast of the country, the city enjoys a prominent and scenic position on the banks of the River Wear. The city of Sunderland sits 21kms to the northeast. There is plenty of opportunity for visitors to enjoy a huge range of historic buildings while visiting, many of which are listed properties. The historic centre is overflowing with historic architecture such as Elvet Bridge, St Giles Church and the Crown Court. Train passengers using the local railway can enjoy fine views over the spectacular viaduct, which was built in Victorian times. Botanical gardens, an art gallery and a Victorian-era indoor market round out the city’s attractions. Parents may like to take kids to Diggerland, an amusement park themed on construction machinery.
