Introduction to Dunwich, England
Once one of England's largest ports, the remote coastal town of Dunwich in Suffolk was the capital of the region 1,500 years ago for its fine harbour, but coastal erosion has taken its toll since the 13th century, leaving it as little more than a village today. A project aiming to photograph the lost undersea town using high-tech underwater cameras is ongoing at present. Most of the former town's medieval buildings have been lost to the sea over the centuries, including all of its ancient churches and monasteries. No more than 120 people live here nowadays, and the cliff tops are still moving closer to the remains of the town. Previously, several Dunwich hotels were set along the coastline, with only one pub and restaurant offering accommodation now remaining and a ruining priory and ancient leper hospital the only ancient landmarks to survive the waves. If you're planning a visit here, be quick as the area is now a 'managed retreat', meaning no attempt will be made to save what remains.
