Introduction to Dorking - City Centre
The historic market town of Dorking lies in the county of Surrey, 40kms to the south of London, overlooked by the North Downs. It's a wealthy area, with many city workers choosing to commute daily and enjoy a semi-rural lifestyle with all amenities at the weekends. The town's history began in the Roman era as a staging post on the London/Chichester link of Stane Street, and King William the Conqueror himself held the manor here in 1086. The picturesque centre of town boasts old coaching inns, rows of Georgian and Victorian houses and shops, and is connected with the medieval Knights Templar. This is a popular visitor destination, known for its antiques shops and centres, and as the birthplace of England's most famous Shakespearian actor, the late Sir Lawrence Olivier. The town centre still holds farmers' markets and has pretty boutiques and interesting shops, with small Dorking City centre hotels and inns offering comfortable accommodation in this historic Olde English town. other spellings: dorking otel citycenter, dorkinghotels, doking city hotell, hote in doeking, hotle droking
