Introduction to Didcot, England
The Oxfordshire town of Didcot lies just 16kms to the south of the world-famous university city of Oxford. Dating from around the 11th century, with records beginning in the 13th century, the settlement was once surrounded by marshland. A small area of the original village can still be seen around Lydalls Road, and the parish church of All Saints dates from the 11th century. Modern Didcot holds many huge scientific research establishments, employing many residents in the area, and contains the Mowbray Fields nature reserve with its rare southern marsh and spotted orchids. Didcot hotels are aimed mainly at business visitors to the research facilities or the overflow from Oxford during the busy tourist season. Didcot's growth as an industrial base resulted from the arrival of two railway lines in the 19th century, displayed to visitors at the Didcot Railway Centre with its fine collection of Great Western Railway steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock as well as a turntable, engine sheds and a restoration workshop. For railway enthusiasts, this is a must-see. other spellings: didctohotels, didoct otel, dicdot hotell, ddicot hote, iddcot hotes, didco
