Introduction to Dereham, England
Dereham is in a quiet spot in Norfolk, with the main attraction for the area being the Mid Norfolk Railway. The volunteer group which runs the historic steam railway owns nearly 18 miles of track, and provides a good day excursion to Wymondham Abbey through the heart of rural Norfolk. The line was originally opened in 1847, making it one of the first railways lines available for the public in the country, and certainly the first in this county. Dereham is the starting point for the trips, and this market town has a few places to stay. Dereham hotels can be found located around the surrounding local villages such as Lying, Brisley and Wending. To get to these rural villages - which provide a charming glimpse into the quaint countryside life here - there are main road routes from Norwich along the A47. The journey by car takes about 30 minutes.
